Situated on the northern edge of Africa on the shores of the Mediterranean, Tunisia is a fascinating country that harmoniously blends historical influences with the dynamism of modernity. From the ancient ruins of Carthage, to the golden dunes of the Sahara, to the picturesque beaches of the coastal cities, Tunisia offers a diverse palette of landscapes and unique experiences.

I chose to visit Tunisia at the end of April, a vacation where I planned to laze on the beach and relax.

Once there, I realized that Tunisia is not only about the beach, but there are many beautiful places to see and experience.

I stayed at the Hotel Mövenpick Resort & Marine Spa in Sousse, a 5* hotel that I highly recommend if you are planning a stay in Tunisia. It’s a hotel that offers everything you could wish for, from beautiful rooms, view, swimming pools, spa, good food to the hospitality of the staff.

Out of the 7 days I spent here, I chose to opt for optional sightseeing tours on 2 days. I didn’t go with the idea of paying at the agency I traveled with, but instead hired a driver for a full day from the internet, who went exactly where I wanted and waited after each sightseeing I chose. It’s all very safe, despite the advice you get.

Sousse

Sousse is one of the largest cities in Tunisia and is known as the “Pearl of the Mediterranean Sea”. The city’s main attraction is the medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 2.5 km of fortifications built in 859. Right in the center of the medina is the Great Mosque of Sousse. Here, in the narrow, cobbled alleyways, you’ll see a plethora of souvenir shops, dates, leather goods, spices, bars and restaurants.

If you want to buy something, it is important to negotiate. Never pay the price you are offered. The important thing to know is that there are many leather goods factories here and they can make you any pattern you want. Just explain to them or show them a picture of the pattern and to have 2 days time for this.

A nice place to see in Sousse is also Port El Kantaoui, which is full of terraces, restaurants, shops and a small amusement park.

Tunis

The capital of Tunisia is an ideal starting point for exploring this vibrant nation and was also the first destination I chose to visit. The medina, with its narrow alleyways and crowded markets, transports you back in time to the heart of ancient civilizations.

Here you can discover impressive Roman mosaics, Islamic architecture and French influences reflected in the local cafes and restaurants.

Carthage

From Tunis, we went to Carthage, where we visited the ruins of Phoenician and Roman civilizations. This wonderful place is one of the most iconic and fascinating historical destinations in Tunisia.

Founded in the 9th century BC by the Phoenicians, Carthage was once a center of power and culture in the ancient world, rivaling Rome in influence and grandeur.

Today, the ruins of Carthage offer a captivating glimpse into this civilization’s glorious past. Here, we saw the imposing remains of Roman amphitheaters, Antonine baths and ancient residential neighborhoods that have survived the passage of time. Unfortunately, the National Museum of Carthage, which houses an impressive collection of artifacts, mosaics, statues and relics, was under renovation when we arrived.

Sidi Bou Said

My favorite place in Tunisia is Sidi Bou Said, also called the Santorini of Tunisia. Located on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, it is one of the most picturesque destinations in Tunisia.

Renowned for its bright white houses and vibrant blue doors, this charming place looks like something out of a fairytale. Strolling through the narrow-cobbled streets, I discovered a bohemian atmosphere and traditional Tunisian architecture that immediately won me over. The quaint cafes are perfect places to sip a mint tea or enjoy the breathtaking sea views.

Sidi Bou Said is more than a tourist destination; it’s a place that offers you an authentic and profound experience of Tunisian culture, an invitation to relax and contemplate.

Hammamet

65 km from Tunis is the resort town of Hammamet on the Mediterranean coast, also called the Pearl of the Tunisian Riviera. Here, I found the liveliest medina, a maze of colorful souks, handcrafted souvenirs and exotic spices.

Tips & tricks:

  • What you need to know from the start if you’re planning to come to Tunisia, is that no grass grows here without tips. To be served quickly and for any service, you have to be willing to give a little attention to the employees.
  • The best teas I have ever had in my life are in Tunisia, my favorite being called Taj Mahal.
  • Best and cheapest hookah.
  • For leather goods, negotiate! See several shops that sell the exact same products and once you’ve made up your mind, arm yourself with patience and practice your negotiating skills, because you can get a price 50% lower than what you are initially offered.
  • It’s a safe country, the people are friendly and outgoing.
  • Definitely choose a 5* hotel, because the 5* you know would be 4* in other countries.
  • It is not worth buying clothes here, outdated and very expensive models. Instead, it’s the best place to buy leather goods, argan oil, spices and dates.
  • The national currency is the Tunisian dinar (DT) and you can change money at the front desk of the hotel where you’re staying.
  • Passport required

Tunisia is known for its warm hospitality and tasty cuisine that combines Mediterranean and African flavors. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover or an adventurer looking for new challenges, Tunisia has something special to offer everyone.

Travel, smile, live!
